Foods To Avoid When Taking MAO Inhibitors
When your doctor prescribes antidepressants, ask if it is an MAOI. If it is, avoid foods with a high content of tyramine. These include:
- Most cheeses, but especially Blue, Boursault, Brick, Brie, Camembert, Cheddar,
Emmentaler, Gruyere, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Romano, Roquefort and Stilton
- Caviar
- Herring
- Sausage meats, including: bologna, pepperoni, salami and summer sausage
- Yeast extracts: i.e. Those foods containing live yeast, such as compressed yeast cakes.
(Cooking kills yeast cells, so baked goods will not cause adverse reactions)
- Chocolate
- For those who enjoy wine and beer…. sorry, you must stay away from Chianti wine and
imported beers. (Feel free to drink white wines because they are made without the grape
pulp and seeds, the possible source of tyramine present in red wines)
When in doubt about the alcohol you prefer to have, discuss it with your doctor; he/she is a good source for your health information!
