RECOGNISING DEPRESSION
Learn to recognize the physical and emotional signs of depression.
| Watch for: |
- erratic sleep patterns, especially early morning insomnia
- apathy, including lack of interest in appearance.
- appetite loss
- complaints of headache, fatigue, or reduction of drive
- profound sadness, with crying spells
- hostility toward self and others
- irritability, particularly toward those who are energetic or lively
- morbid preoccupation with self
- anxiety or despair, with strongly expressed fears of death
|
By maintaining a calm, positive manner, you may ease the depressed individual's stress and lift his/her spirits. But remember, consult a doctor if you have any concerns
regarding a person's change in behavior or mood.
However, do not consider yourself a failure if you cannot help him/her. The
depression may be so severe that psychiatric help is required. Never feel you
have to succeed with every depressed patient; just do the best you can. By
relieving even a little stress you may help more than you realized.
