TREATING DEPRESSION
Antidepressant medication is the treatment of choice for moderate to severe depression. Early recognition and intervention in an acute episode of depression may not only save a patient months of pain and disability, but may also save his or her life.
When selecting an antidepressant agent, the doctor will consider both short- and long-term treatment issues. For example, short-term considerations of treatment address issues such as anxiety, sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction.
Dealing with these difficult symptoms, commonly associated with depression, will help the doctor manage the long-term issue of compliance. Prior to selecting an antidepressant, the doctor will discuss these issues with the individual.
